  • Stiffness

Limited movement in the operated joint.

  • Pain and swelling

Normal after surgery, but can limit progress.

  • Difficulty walking

Needing a frame, crutches or support.

  • Weakness

Muscles weaken quickly after an operation.

  • Low confidence

Worry about moving or doing too much.

Why it happens

Common causes

  • Joint replacement (knee, hip, shoulder)
  • Fracture fixation
  • Ligament reconstruction
  • Spinal and other orthopaedic surgery

When to seek help

When to see a physiotherapist

Early assessment and the right exercises can help reduce pain, improve movement and prevent the problem from coming back.

You should see a physiotherapist if:

  • You have been discharged after an operation
  • Your surgeon has recommended physiotherapy
  • You are struggling with stairs or walking
  • Your joint remains stiff or weak
  • You want to return to work, sport or hobbies

Seek urgent medical care if you:

  • Redness, heat or discharge from the wound, or fever
  • Calf pain, swelling or redness
  • Chest pain or sudden shortness of breath
  • A sudden increase in pain or loss of movement

If you have any of these, call Rescue 1122 or go to your nearest emergency department — don’t wait for a physiotherapy appointment.
